Rameshwaram goes Green

Green Rameshwaram” is an initiative of Vivekananda Kendra under its Natural Resources Development Project (NARDEP) activities. As a catalytic agent, Vivekananda Kendra has brought the stakeholders together through networking to join hands in this transformation. It reinforces the belief that true development happens only when it is holistic and sustainable.
Rameshwaram is a unique island that has a special place in the hearts of Indians. It contains within its shores history, mythology, spirituality, religion, archeology, natural beauty, bio-diversity. It attracts tourists and pilgrims in equal numbers.
To preserve its wonderful gifts of nature, Rameshwaram needs to go green. It needs intelligent landscaping, green transport, a solid waste-disposal system, an underground drainage and sewage network, rain-water harvesting pits and livelihood opportunities for locals through sale of special merchandise. Rameshwaram needs to combine eco-tourism with religious tourism to preserve its place on the tourist map of India. Any developmental activity in Rameshwaram should focus on preserving its historical and archaeological monuments and conserve its ocean bio-diversity spots even as provisions are made for tourist influx.
While active involvement of the local stakeholders is crucial to the greening of Rameshwaram, tourists too must be made participants in its preservation. This can happen only through education. Rameshwaram needs multi-media centres to showcase its cultural, anthropological, natural heritage. A visit to Rameshwaram must be an experience, not just a trip. This newsletter is an attempt to showcase the initiatives happened in the month of August 2016 in different verticals for updation and seeks your involvement and participation like the Squirrel did to enable Lord Rama to build the bridge to Sri Lanka.

Ma. P. Parmeswaranji's Message on Universal Brotherhood Day

September 11 is now famously known as the Universal Brotherhood Day. It is because that day Swami Vivekananda addressed the delegates at the Parliament of World Religions at Chicago as 'Sisters and Brothers'. He addressed the Parliament as the representative of the Hindus all over the world. To the Hindu, all men and women, irrespective of caste, creed or religion are brothers and sisters. It was for the first time in the history of the world that such a beautiful concept was expressed. It is in remembrance of this that this day is called Universal Brotherhood Day.

Shiksharthis who have undergone the course of four months here as part of their 5 year training period, will certainly spread this message through their life and their activities. That is the expectation from the Vivekananda Kendra. Let us all become role models in this.

Every Karyakarta must cultivate two kinds of abilities- one that of organising and two spreading the ideology. Ma. Eknathji had these two in ample measures as the Sir Karyavah of the RSS and later on in founding and spreading the Vivekananda Kendra. This stood him in good stead as a powerful orator and unique organiser. I had experienced this in my close association with him. Every Karyakarta must also assiduously cultivate these two aspects.

Let the blessings of Swami Vivekananda and Ma. Eknathji be on you all.

From Population to Invincible Tyrant

The sufi mystic Ibn-al-Arabi wrote that God is essentially in all things.
Dreams in the plant,
Stirs in the animal,
And awakens in man”
This Vedantic vision was also echoed by Swami Vivekananda when he proclaimed - “Each soul is potentially divine ………..” Today, 2nd September is the anniversary of the Vivekananda Rock Memorial. On this day in the year 1970, the grand Vivekananda Rock Memorial was inaugurated as a tribute to the great patriotic saint Swami Vivekananda. Let us remember him and re-dedicate ourselves for his mission - awakening the God in Man.
This month Tenali Raman is expressing his wisdom in the field of ‘’Population – Migiration and Habitat’. In our happenings section, we have covered training programmes on Terrace gardening, Safe food, Cost effective construction and Bio-methanation plants. This time also in Green Health, we have a training programme on Awareness, Documentation & Standardisation of Varma medical practices.
In the wisdom section, Prof.Makarand Paranjape tells us how the food is used as a source of stimulation in the modern times and concludes by saying that “Eating simply is the basis of an ethical life”.  Georg Simmel tells us about the Genuine Relationship while Dr.Madhusudana Reddy warns us that human motivation; lust an ambition is making the technology an invincible tyrant. INSPIRING INCIDENTS

J.Subbulakshmi- Thangammal puram – Thoothukudi District

A five years old boy. Rajesh Kannan is studying in our Creche. He is a good and obedient student. His sister (1 ½ years old) was admitted during Saraswathi Pooja. She is crying most of the time. This makes Rajesh Kannan worried and he used to control himself. He will come near her and clean her face and look after her very kindly. When the teacher feeds the child he comes and asks the teacher to allow him to feed her so that she will eat more. One day her legchain fell somewhere. A child named Mariselvi found it and gave it to the teacher. On seeing this, Rajesh told his mother not to send his sister with ornaments as the teacher had much work in the school. She should not thrust more work on

her. The boys maturity touched my heart.

N.Chandra – Ambai – Tirunelveli district

As I was suffering from some poisonous infection I went to a shop to buy medicinal plant for it. There I met a Headmaster and his wife working as a teacher in V.K.Puram. As they were known to me they talked intimately. The shopkeeper enquired me about my job and advised me to take care of the health. “Doing service is appreciable. To continue best service good health is essential” saying this he treated me kindly. I am proud of being a Kendra service worker.

V.Saradha, Social Workers – Thoothukudi District

This incident happened while conducting Midalangadu cultural competitions. One of the special invitees for the valedictory function asked us to tell a story to inspire the participants. At once Kasthuri teacher narrated a story in simple language so as to make all the children understand. The person who asked for the story told us that he didn’t even know that story and appreciated her. He also commented that the trainees of Vivekananda Kendra were talented and service – minded. VKVAPT August month newsletter

A martial arts student went to his teacher and said earnestly, “I am devoted to studying your martial system. How long will it take me to master it?”

The teacher’s reply was casual, “Ten years.” Impatiently, the student answered, “But I want to master it faster than that. I will work very hard. I will practice every day, ten or more hours a day if I have to. How long will it take then?”

The teacher thought for a moment, “20 years”.
