Isvaraprityartham

The Gurupoornima for this year is on 12 July. Gurupoornima is an occasion to remind ourselves that we are doing the work of Isvara – ‘Isvaraprityartham’.

The Jayanti of Maharishi Veda Vyasa is celebrated since time immemorial in our country as Gurupoornima. His whole life was to organize the Vedas and our Vedic heritage in such a way that its continuity and purposefulness is maintained. The message of Oneness given by Vedas is essential for the well-being of the world which is getting disintegrated because of excessive materialism and individualism. The humanity in its evolution needs this Vedic Vision of Oneness. It is the work of Ishvara. But to be able to do that we Indians need to shake off our confused understanding of Dharma which is limited at present only to religious practices; we also need to shake off whatever lethargy, jealousy and selfishness that has entered due to the invasions and the colonial rule.

For that, during those testing times of invasions and more since the time of Swami Vivekananda, various organized efforts are being taken up. Vivekananda Kendra is also one such effort. While explaining Swami Vivekananda’s message, Mananeeya Eknathji used to tell that, “Intense practice of Dharma means experiencing the presence of God in one’s own self and in the world. That makes one conscious of the divine within and urges him to work for its unfoldment and enables him to grow spiritually. Simultaneously, it generates in him a sense of oneness with God’s creation and, consequently, an intense fellow-feeling for the members of his own species – the human race – and prompts him to work with zest for human welfare and progress… If, and as long as, the spiritual awakening intensifies on these lines, it is dynamic and full of tremendous potentialities for the transformation of humanity into higher and higher planes of existence. But, if it remains limited to rituals, forms of worship and offerings to God, or prayers and praises addressed to Him, it becomes static and has hardly any role to play in human advancement.” Being aware of the need of the society, Eknathji envisaged a thought movement which would take into account the natural god-wardness of our people and channelize it for practicing Dharma which helps one manifest one’s divinity and also propels him to work for the society.

For Eknathji, the Memorial for Swami Vivekananda was not limited to the one at the Rock but he wanted a vibrant memorial to Swami Vivekananda ‘in an organized efforts’ so that India becomes capable in delivering her mission. Therefore Eknathji founded Vivekananda Kendra, a spiritually oriented service mission. Explaining about the need of such organization Eknathji said, “The remedy for the ills of our country, therefore, lies in launching a mighty movement of right thought sweeping the entire country. It has to be a two-pronged move. On the one hand, it is to be aimed at (1) transforming our people’s inherent God-wardness into the right spiritual urge rising out of the teachings of the Upanishads, namely, (a) each soul is potentially divine and (b) faith in God, in turn means faith in one’s self, i.e. in one’s potentiality to rise to divine heights. On the other hand, it is (2) to convert the spiritual fervour thus released into works of national reconstruction.

To continue in such spiritually oriented work, a timeless source of inspiration and guidance is required. A source which represents all that India has stood for; a source to which Karyakarta has to surrender and also can draw succor for oneself; a source which can motivate a karyakarta coming from any region and tradition of India; a source which would link Karyakartas to the hoary past of our ancient land and yet has the potentiality to embrace the whole world. Obviously a personality howsoever great could not be chosen for the same. In this Ishwariya Karya – God’s work -who should be our guide other than Ishwara? Our Kendra prayer also focuses on Tavaivakaryartham Iha Upajatah – we are born to do Your work only. Our guide in doing this work of God is none other than God. How is God understood? How will He speak to us? Tasya Vachakah Pranavah says Patanjali. The God speaks to us through Omkar. Omkar is verily the expression of God. Thus Omkar Upasana is necessary for those who work for the well-being of the whole universe. Therefore, in Vivekananda Kendra, Omkar is our Guru.

Omkar encompasses all the names and forms of God. When we say God is our guide what do we mean? God is not going to tell us directly to do this or do that. The whole universe has come out of Omkar, thus God has manifested as this universe. Swami Vivekananda says, “When He is less manifested, it is called darkness, evil; and when He is more manifested, it is called light. That is all. Good and evil are only a question of degree: more manifested or less manifested. …The difference is only in degree. It is all a manifestation of that Atman; He is being manifested in everything; only, when the manifestation is (covered) very thickly we call it evil; and when it is (covered) very thinly, we call it good. It is the best, when all covering goes away. So everything that is in the universe is to be meditated upon in that sense alone, that we can see it as all good, because it is the best.”

Where there is thought for others, service of others, absence of selfishness, absence of jealousy; Ishwara is manifested more explicitly. Thus Ishwara is manifested in our Karya, our dayitva and also in the team of Karyakartas with whom we work. Thus when we worship our Guru, it means actually we are reiterating our resolve to be steadfast to our goal, to work in an organized way. Therefore Omkar as our Guru gives us the understanding that individual opinions are to be submitted for collective wisdom; the collective decisions are taken as the guidance of God; each Karyakarta becomes precious to all; organizational functioning is followed as sacred Sadhana.

Omkar means affirmation, creation, inclusive approach and self-effacement. Thus, every Karyakarta by Omkar Upasana strives to create by practicing self-effacement and is constructive and positive in his approach. Omkar Upasana has been followed in India since time immemorial and thus India has been inclusive in her approach. To maintain and nurture this all inclusive and all-embracing spiritual tradition of India many Rishis, saints, warriors have lived and died for her. Thus Omkar Upasana also means that all those personalities, incidents become the source of inspiration for us to keep the flame of this spiritual land alive and vibrant.

We are striving to expand our work on the eve of Mananeeya Eknathji Janma Shati Parva. Thus celebrating Gurupurnima becomes important as it enables us to inculcate the vision and values with which we should work. We can focus this year on the practice of self-effacement as we celebrate Gurupoornima in our branch centers so as to strengthen ourselves as a right instrument in the hands of God.

Guru purnima Celebration at Vedic Vision Foundation

On the auspicious occasion of Gurupoornima, a day long programme was arranged at Aandadham. Ganapathi Homam and Sri Chakra Puja were conducted in the Dakshina auditorium of Anandadham in the early morning. At 10 a.m. there was a get together of all the yoga varga members around eighteen of them, some of whom are working as yoga teachers in different schools in and around of Kodungallur. Mananeeya Lakshmi Didi explained about the significance of ‘Guru Parampara down the ages namely, Narayana, Padmabhuva, Vasistha, Saktrimaharshi, Parashara, Vyasa and Sukha and how during Vyasa’s time all the divine knowledge which the previous seers had passed on to their respective disciples orally, were codified into texts called vedas and later on puranas. It was on this day that the great sage Vyasa was said to have been born, hence this day is celebrated as Vyasa’s jayanthi all over India as a mark of respect for the great saint who is addressed as ‘Vishala buddhe’ in the Bhagavat Geeta. Chanting of the Guru Sloka and pushparchana were part of this two hour programme.

In the evening Adv. T.R.Ramanathan of Paravur, an advocate by profession and well-known for his profound knowledge and great oratory, spoke on ‘Guha Gurun Subrahmanya Swami’(Kartikeyan) and kept the audience spellbound. Nearly a hundred people attended.the programme.

Rameshwaram cleanup drive makes quiet and steady progress

CHENNAI: Ganga has Modi & team, but it's the NGO drive that is doing the cleanup act for South's temple town Rameshwaram. Even before the Centre embarked on an ambitious programme to clean up the Ganga, temple town Rameshwaram in the south had decided that it needed a clean break from its polluting ways on its own.

Located on Tamil Nadu's southern coastline, Rameshwaram is one of the holiest places for Hindus and receives about 1.5 crore pilgrims and tourists every year, resulting in the degeneration of the environment and ecological balance around the area. But earlier this year a group led by non-governmental organisation Vivekananda Kendra began work to clean and transform Rameswaram through what it calls the "Green Rameshwaram Project". The plan was set rolling in January by former president APJ Abdul Kalam.

"It all started with cleaning the water bodies (or 'theerthams' as they are called) in and around the famous Ramanatha Swamy temple. They were almost ruined and we revived those," said G Vasudeo, secretary of Vivekananda Kendra's Natural Resources Development Project.

"Then with this success, we decided to take up the cleaning of the entire town." A detailed report is being prepared but a rough estimate shows the project will require about Rs 250 crore, says Vivekananda Kendra. It plans to rope in like-minded individual donors and corporate donors for the cause. The project will address issues such as archaeology, history, marine biodiversity, solid waste management, ecotourism, and beautification, among other things.

The Vivekananda Kendra has tied up with organisations, such as Brahmos Aerospace to help in solar electrification of some hamlets in Dhanushkodi, the southernmost tip of the island. The team is also is exploring ways of working with IIT-Madras for help in the use of certain technologies.

"We have had initial rounds of discussions with the Kendra and we would be working with them in areas such as clean transport, non-conventional use of energy and atmospheric pollution control," said S Gopalakrishnan, project consultant at The Rural Technology Action Group, IIT-M. The dumping of waste such as plastic items into the sea has been one of the main factors for the depletion of fish in the surrounding areas, forcing fishermen to move further away from the coast for their catch.

"The dumping of sewage into the sea has even made the courts to say that taking a dip in it is a health hazard. But people come here all the way to wash away their sins in these holy waters," said Aravindan Neelakantan, a volunteer with the Vivekananda Kendra. He said water bodies in Rameshwaram have been scientifically built centuries ago and excellent examples of rainwater harvesting. "We are just trying to revive these. It is astonishing to find freshwater in these water bodies given that we are surrounded by saline water," he says.

Renovated the Sahadeva and Nakula teerthams at Rameswaram

The traditional water bodies of Rameshwaram are finding a new life. Already Vivekananda Kendra-nardep has renovated the Sahadeva and Nakula teerthams. We have renovated vitally the Arjuna and Bhima teertham. But the remaining one Pandava prince and eldest of them all -Dharma : teertham in his name has been missing. After months of search we at last zeroed in on the spot. We conducted the initial ceremonies, involved the local people, removed the thorny bushes encroaching upon the teertham which was completely lost and now the teertham is coming up. Read about it in our newsletter.

This month we give you further details about the Green Rameshwaram project. It has started already to have an impact with green awareness meetings been conducted for special interest groups and stake-holders, clean-green awareness campaigns taking place and green health camps being conducted. We present in this newsletter the continuation of the core-group activities and deliverable goals fixed for each of the core-groups.

We also have happenings at different sections of our work: sustainable agriculture workshops, workshops on bio-methanation plants, workshops on traditional medical systems etc. In our publication section we continue the eco-toons : this time we emphasize the importance of combining values of sustainability with science and technology in order to achieve sustainable development.

In our wisdom section we share how the food culture has to be sustainable: we need to move towards 'slow food' from 'fast food'; about the need for preserving cultural traditions of sustainability and also how the essence of everything connects us all together. Surely you will enjoy all these aspects of our newsletter. We have the solar technologist Jagadish Kapur's passage where he says: The understanding of the perennial cultural streams, and nature-based tribal cultures;and myths; with their reverence towards nature or ecology becomes the bridge between science and spirituality. We also have the passage from the interview of famous sustainable food culture guru who says: Today we have less biodiversity, we waste a big percentage of the food we produce, and we have millions of people dying of hunger. Those are real problems that we choose to take on. And we have a mystic who speaks about perceiving the unity of all that can be perceived, all that can be seen, at all levels of reality, including all beings and everything.
