Honourable CM of Arunachal Pradesh Unveils Swami Vivekananda’s Murti at Kaho – The First Village of Bharat

The Arunachal Prant of Vivekananda Kendra Kanyakumari, a spiritually oriented service mission working on the principles of Man-Making and Nation-Building, has engaged the entire nation — including Karyakartas, well-wishers, and students of various Vivekananda Kendra Vidyalayas (VKVs) across Assam and Arunachal Pradesh — in the installation of a twelve-foot Murti (statue) of Swami Vivekananda at Kaho, the first village of Bharat, located in Kibithoo Circle, Anjaw District, Arunachal Pradesh, at the northeastern frontier of India bordering the Tibet province of China.

The entire journey of transporting the Swamiji’s murti across Assam and Arunachal Pradesh to its final destination at Kaho was named Vivekananda Yatra. This Yatra served as an awakening call to the people of the state, inspiring them to stand tall in the face of challenges posed by neighboring nations — a message that continues to hold deep significance.

 Vision Behind the Yatra

The Vivekananda Yatra, a significant journey symbolizing national unity and spiritual awakening, commenced from Anandalaya Bhawan in Dibrugarh on January 28, 2025. The inspiration for this journey originated three years ago when Kendra Karyakartas visited Kaho. The residents expressed their desire to have Swami Vivekananda’s presence in their village, just as he is present at the southernmost tip of Bharat (Vivekananda Rock Memorial, Kanyakumari). Their vision was to have Swami Ji symbolically embracing Bharat from both its southern and northeastern boundaries.

Journey and Key Events

The Yatra was a spiritually and culturally significant journey that aimed to spread Swami Vivekananda’s message of national unity, selfless service, and spiritual awakening. The Yatra was meticulously planned and executed by Vivekananda Kendra, Arunachal Prant, with the goal of carrying Swami Vivekananda’s Murti to Kaho, the first village of Bharat

Furthermore, the murti reached at Kaho passing through Dirak gate in Mahadevpur, Namsai District, Namsai Nagar, Chongkham Circle and Roing, Lower Dibang Valley District on 28th Jan’2025.

On 29th Jan’2025, the Yatra resumed its journey from Roing Nagar to Digaru check gate, and Lohit Valley School at Tezu Nagar, proceeded towards VKV Tezu where a formal reception of the murti was performed by the Karyakartas, well-wishers, and students of VKV Tezu and VKV Tafrogam with band troop.

On 30th Jan’2025, the Yatra reached to VKV Amliang, then to Hayuliang town and finally reached Hawaii, the district headquarters of Anjaw District. Again, the Yatra began its final journey from Hawaii to Walong town, and finally reached its destination, Kaho on 31st Jan’2025 with warm reception from the Karyakartas, well-wishers, and army personnel stationed at Kaho. Above mentioned are the routes of journey undertaken by the Vivekananda Yatra from Assam to Kaho, the first village of Bharat located at Indo-China border.

The Yatra commenced from Anandalaya Bhawan in Dibrugarh on January 28, 2025, with great enthusiasm and participation from devotees, scholars, and local communities.

The journey covered multiple locations across Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, where cultural programs, discussions, and spiritual gatherings were held to educate people about Swami Vivekananda’s teachings.

The Murti was welcomed with traditional rituals at various stops, symbolizing the deep respect and admiration for Swami Vivekananda’s contributions to India’s spiritual and intellectual heritage.

The Yatra culminated in Kaho, a village located in Kibithoo Circle, Anjaw District, near the Line of Actual Control (LAC), reinforcing the message of national integration and cultural preservation.

 Unveiling of Swami Vivekananda's Murti

On May 13, 2025, the Honourable Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, Shri Pema Khandu ji, in the presence of the Honourable Deputy Chief Minister, Shri Chowna Mein ji, and a host of cabinet ministers, unveiled the murti of Swami Vivekananda at Kaho — a village near the Line of Actual Control (LAC). The ceremony was graced by Mananeeya Shri Hanumantarao Ji, All-India Vice President of Vivekananda Kendra Kanyakumari, along with Kendra Karyakartas, alumni of VKVs, General Body memebers and the general public, Army personnel, among others. The event was a profound statement of Bharat’s commitment to national integration in the border areas of the northeastern state.

During the unveiling ceremony, the Chief Minister Shri Pema Khandu ji emphasized the significance of Swami Vivekananda’s teachings, stating that the murti would serve as a guiding light for generations, reminding people that true patriotism begins with the upliftment of villages, people, and values.

This significant event marks a historic moment, reinforcing the message of strength, service, and spiritual awakening at the easternmost frontier of India. The Yatra and the installation of the murti symbolize the eternal guidance and inspiration Swami Vivekananda provides to the nation.

 Community Participation and Impact

The Yatra saw active participation from local villagers, students, and spiritual leaders, who engaged in discussions about Swami Vivekananda’s vision for a strong and self-reliant India.

Educational institutions and youth organizations played a crucial role in spreading awareness about Swami Vivekananda’s ideals, ensuring that his teachings continue to inspire future generations.

The journey was not just about transporting a murti—it was a symbolic movement that encouraged people to embrace self-discipline, service, and patriotism.

 Strengthening National Identity

The Yatra reinforced the idea that every corner of India, including its border villages, is integral to the nation’s identity.

The participation of armed forces personnel and ITBP members in welcoming the Murti highlighted the spirit of unity and patriotism.

The event emphasized the importance of uplifting remote communities, ensuring they remain connected to the broader national consciousness.

The unveiling of Swami Vivekananda’s murti at Kaho on May 13, 2025, by Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu, marked the culmination of this historic Yatra, leaving a lasting impact on the region and the nation. The murti now stands as a beacon of inspiration, reminding people of Swami Vivekananda’s timeless wisdom and his call to serve humanity with strength and dedication.

The Vivekananda Yatra was more than just a journey—it was a movement of awakening, leaving a lastig impact on the people it touched. It strengthened cultural pride, national unity, and spiritual awareness, ensuring Swami Vivekananda’s legacy continues to inspire generations.

Mission Shakti - Arunachal Pradesh

Mission Shakti- anemia detection and eradication program initiated by Vivekananda Kendra Swasthya Seva Sadan , Laipuli, Tinsukia, Assam was launched on 1st January 2021. This program is funded by India Development and Relief Fund (IDRF), USA. Our objective was to conduct outreach camps in some remote villages of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh to detect acute anemia among women and adolescent girls and help them to come out from this health issue. We selected 7 villages of Assam and 14 villages of Arunachal Pradesh. All the villages of Assam are in Tinsukia district and the villages of Arunachal Pradesh are in Namsai and Changlang districts. The mobile medical unit of Vivekananda Kendra Arun Jyoti, Arunachal Pradesh took the responsibility to implement this program in Arunachal Pradesh.

The first phase was over in April 2021. We screened 1738 women and out of them 903 were found as severely anemic. Digital haemoglobinometer were used to accurately measure the hemoglobin levels. After confirmation they were provided with Iron supplements for two months. Counseling sessions were conducted and our team suggested them to consume and produce iron rich local foods available in their area. Local self help groups, ASHA workers, Anganwadi Workers and various community based organizations were contacted and were involved in Mission Shakti program. Community involvement and participation made the whole program very effective and penetrative.

The first round of follow up started from June 2021. It was very encouraging to see that 60% women were found with a raised hemoglobin level. We could locate 90% first phase beneficiaries in our follow up camps which is very encouraging.

During the exercise, we found that in some communities like Missing community in Arunachal Pradesh and Adivasi community in Assam, anemia cases are more. In some villages, we even found 80%-90% women are anemic. After talking to people, observing their food habits and other social behaviors it was found that there are multiple reasons behind this. We are trying to address those issues also in a phased manner. Dept. of Women and Child Welfare is also helping us in this program especially in Namsai district of Arunachal Pradesh.

Second round of follow up will start in October 2021 and our target is to reduce anemia by 75%-80% in the villages we selected by December 2021.

Vivekananda Kendra Vidhyalaya News Letter - 2020-2021

The year 2020 has seen some unprecedented events. The entire human race was attacked by an unknown and exampled enemy. The enemy disguised by the name Corona was so fierce that it caused havoc and despoliation wherever it went. However, there is always light at the end of the tunnel. With their backs to the wall the entire Homo sapiens race fought back. The VKV family in this hour of great crisis has shown exemplary courage and determination and with the blessings of Thakur Sri Ramakrishna, Maa Sarada Devi and Swamiji we are slowly but surely returning back to normalcy. But we should not let our guards down any time. These difficult times have taught us to explore new horizons which otherwise would not have been traversed under ordinary circumstances. Numerous activities were conducted during the year using different unique techniques. Some of the glimpses are below link.

Vivekananda Kendra Swasthya Seva Sadan, Laipuli, Tinsukia, Assam and Vivekananda Kendra Arun Jyoti, Arunachal Pradesh in association with India Development and Relief Fund (IDRF), USA started an anaemia detection and eradication program, MISSION SHAKTI for women in 16 villages in Tinsukia district of Assam and Changlang , Tirap and Namsai districts of Arunachal Pradesh. The program was launched on 1st January 2021. Our team conducted 16 camps and examined 1381 women. 716 women (12 yrs to 45 yrs) were screened for Anaemia and 206 women were found as acutely anaemic by March 2021. Almost 30% women were found as acute anaemic. Counselling of anaemic women were done and they were informed about their iron deficiency and were advised to consume iron rich locally available food like dark green leafy vegetables , banana flower etc.  All anaemic women were provided with Iron Folic Acid supplements. Initially, we provided them supplements for three months. After three months, second round of Haemoglobin estimation will be done to see the impact. We have already done the second round of screening in one village and it was found that the haemoglobin level has been substantially increased in all the four anaemic women of that village.
It is a research work as we are working in various ethnic groups of Tinsukia district and Eastern Arunachal Pradesh. The communities included are tea tribes, Tangsa, Ahom, Missing, Sonowal Kachari, Motok and Hindi speaking migrants. As per the present data available with us, it is found that in Missing community, anaemia is more prevalent as we found nearly 60% women are anaemic. So, we are planning to include a few more Missing villages in the second phase. Along with conducting medical camps, we are studying the food habits of various ethnic groups, their life styles, their way of growing nutritious vegetables etc. to find a holistic solution to eradicate anaemia.

One small step can changed one's life

In August 2018, the Mobile Medical Team of Vivekananda Kendra Arun Jyoti visited Wakka for Medical Camps. Our Nagar Sanyojak, Sri Saikhang Sir informed us about an eight years old boy, Kr Danggang Gangsa of Wakka village. Wakka is in Longding Dist of Arunachal Pradesh, about 90 Kms hill track from Dibrugarh which takes around 5-6 hrs with own vehicle and more than 12 hrs by Govt bus.
Kr Danggang Gangsa was born in 2010 with anorectal malformation. It was a medical emergency and colostomy surgery was immediately done in Dibrugarh. The Doctors advised the parents to visit them after 6 months, so that they can operate him for the anal opening. But, due to financial crisis, they didn’t come for the second operation and kept the children
at home. We went to see the children. The condition was pathetic. As he had the anal opening at his abdomen, he stayed in isolation and he didn’t have any friends to play with. Even his siblings avoided him.  He didn’t go to school. The parents requested us if we can do something for this child.
As he needed multiple and complicated surgeries, we decided to find out the best paediatric surgeon of Upper Assam.  We got to know about Dr. Hemonto Dutta, Professor and HOD of Paediatric Surgery, Assam Medical College, Dibrugarh. We contacted him and briefed about the child and about their financial condition. He immediately agreed to see the child and the child was examined in October 2018. DR. Dutta Sir fixed the date for the first surgery. Sir assured that the free will be free of cost. But the parents were so poor that they even didn’t have money for travelling and staying at Dibrugarh for few days. So, the people of Wakka area started crowd funding and collected some funds for them. The child was successfully operated and the anal opening was created. It was a very critical and long surgery. But he recovered fast and was discharged after ten days. They were advised to come after six to ten month for the next surgery. Our team was always in contact with them to see the progress of the child.
In July 2019, they came to Dibrugarh again for the next surgery. He was operated to close the colostomy. This occasion, the present MLA of Wakka also helped them financially. It was a minor surgery and the child was discharged after five days. Now Kr Danggang Gangsa is in his own village, happy and healthy. Parents are planning to admit him to the local school very soon.
We the Mobile Medical Team of Vivekananda Kendra Arun Jyoti are very grateful to Dr. Hemonto Dutta Sir for all the help he offered. The way the people of Wakka area came out to help the family of the little child is praiseworthy. If the society  ecomes sensitive and concerned like this, nobody will suffer.

PROJECT POSHAN: A nutritional initiative by Vivekananda Kendra Arun Jyoti and India Development and Relief Fund

“They alone live who live for others. Rest are more dead than alive”- Swami Vivekananda

How true is the saying! Only those who have treaded the same path will understand the true meaning of these words. Since its inception, Vivekananda Kendra Kanyakumari has literally lived this saying. All its projects are designed and oriented towards the upliftment of the underprivileged with the active participation of the community. It is the community which understands the problems they face better than any outsider, so the community must come together to actively participate in the mitigation of the same.

When we started our mobile medical activities, we had the opportunity to serve several remote corners of Arunachal Pradesh and observe at first hand the various factors affecting the health of the general masses. Malnutrition among children is one of them. The major causes which aggravate this problem are less crop production because of high altitude, less or non availability of food supplies due to poor surface connectivity, lack of education, no nearby health care provider and most importantly lack of awareness among the parents.

For a long time we have been thinking of addressing the problem of malnutrition which is a major cause of infant and child mortality and  poor health and productivity in later life. But two major requirements to start the programme were assured and continuous flow of funds and finding the right person within the community who can execute it with dedication. To start with we selected four villages of Lazu and Wakka Circles of Tirap and Longding districts. For this purpose we started meeting the people of Pongkong, Longliang, Wakka and Khanu villages and discussed how effectively the programme can be conducted with their active participation. They started selecting the children who needed supplementary food and the volunteers who will monitor and work for this purpose. India Development and Relief Fund (IDRF), USA was generous enough to provide fund for the financial year 2018-19 and assured all possible help for its continuation.

Our medical team then visited all these villages and examined the enrolled children. Finally, the programme was started in August 2018. The selected children are regularly provided one staple food along with some protein supplement. All the children assemble in the community hall and our workers provide them the food for the day. After partaking of the food the children play some organized games and they are also taught a few rhymes and numbers by our trained workers. They also take care of the health and hygiene of the children and in case of occurrence of any disease the medical team is immediately informed for necessary action.

On 16/11/2018, our medical team visited Pongkong village and found all the enrolled children i.e. 46 in number were present and the workers were taking care of the children as per the instruction. A marked improvement was seen in the children. Basic health parameters were checked and found to be satisfactory. It was also heartening to see that the children were cleaner and tidier and showed discipline. It was encouraging to see that the entire village is very positive towards the programme and they have also come up to contribute for the programmme from their meager means. To cite an example, a village youth provides the fire woods to cook the food. The educated youths help the workers to keep proper records.
We hope to continue and expand this programme to more such needy areas and solicit participation from everyone.
