A free cataract surgery (PHACO) surgery was conducted at Tinsukia civil Hospital, Tinsukia, Assam on 17th and 18th February 2020 by Vivekananda Kendra Kanyakumari. This camp was conducted in association with District Blindness Control Society, Tinsukia. 52 poor and needy patients were successfully operated by Dr. Jitendra Talavia and Dr. Abhijit Deshpande from Nagpur. They bought PHACO machines and ophthalmic microscope from Nagpur to render this valuable service to the poor and needy cataract patients.
The camp was inaugurated on 17th February by Dr. Mridul Kumar Gogoi, Medical Superintendent of Tinsukia Civil Hospital. The guest doctors were felicitated by the Nagar Samity members of Vivekananda Kendra, Tinsukia nagar. All the senior Doctors of Tinsukia Civil Hospital were present during the inaugural program. Sri Amulya Borgohain, District Project Manager of District Blindness Control Society briefly explained the objective of the camp. Dr. Mridul Kr.Gogoi appreciated the initiative of Vivekananda Kendra in the field of eye care in Tinsukia district, especially in Sadiya area. The vote of thanks was given by Sri Sashi Bhusan Goyal, Nagar Sanchalak of Vivekananda Kendra, Tinsukia. This is to be mentioned that all the medicines and surgical disposables required for the camp were donated by Sri Sashi Bhushan Goyal and Sri Pawan Jain.
To detect cataract patients, Vivekananda Kendra conducted 8 screening camps at various locations i.e. IOC Gate, Sripuria, Siding Bazar, Makum Road, Pakhorijan village, Laipuli village, Digboi and Balugada. Two ophthalmic assistant screened more than 500 patients and identified 60 patients. During these camps 110 pairs of spectacles were distributed.
