Vimarsh at Jaipur : Dharma Bharat Ki Atma

Vishwabhanu Dec-jan 2015

One of the most wonderful things about our Motherland is how she has withstood the shock of centuries’ of military and cultural invasions and has still maintained her spiritual wisdom and cultural unity. She has held together in a federal  form, scores of religions, cults, philosophies and cultural traits, leave alone languages, dress hab-its and living customs. Despite all these she has  projected herself as one entity; we may add one without a second.

This unity is not superimposed militarily or  forcibly. It is a very very natural phenomenon.  Just as a huge banyan tree spreading itself with its big and small branches, branchlets up to the tiniest buds maintain its unity, so has Bharat remained as one. This is made possible because throughout the whole huge tree of Bharat the sap that rejuvenates, nourishes and maintains its unity is one and one only. Our great seers from Vedic times onwards understood the great secret behind the universe, as One in the many and made realizing that One the goal of human exist-ence, the sum and substance of it. The result is our “Bharat Mahan” for the whole world to see and emulate if need be.

That sap, the One without a second is the  power Eternal Truth, the Truth which the great seers divined deep within themselves when they learnt to shut the five sense organs to the world of sense objects. This capacity of introversion, enabling one to climb the citadels of Truth came as natural gift to those who turned their atten-tion from the world outside to the within. Wonder of wonders is their discovery that this capacity for Self-actualization is inherent in every human being. One has only to strive for it.

It is this concept of truth, its Oneness that has held this nation together as one entity irrespective of her multiplicity of cultural traits and bewildering complexity of regional character-istics. When money and lust became the twin deities of the world culture, sad to say, India also  followed suit. Despite a strong foundation built on Satya and Dharma. Presently it looks almost impossible to turn the cloth back, yet it is the sacred duty of every Indian to help our Mother-land gain back her spiritual wisdom and culture.  Attempts we must. India’s cohesion and strength lie in the unbreakable spiritual - cultural thread  passing through all paths of the country despite its striking differences in languages, customs, dress and habits.

Let us not forget that it is this inner bond that enabled us to gain freedom from the alien rule. Spirituality alone can instill undaunted cultural patriotism surpassing the divisions of the cast, community and religion. We have to help the people to regain this vision of Oneness and for that we need a cultural and spiritual reinforcement in the country. “Satyam param dheemahi” must become the battle cry of the new generation.

It was organized by Calcutta University, NSS group and conducted by Vivekananda Kendra Kolkata Mahanagar. The  presence of nearly 1000 students and teachers representing 130 college units was a successful event as the participants showed  eagerness for being  a member of Vivekananda Youth Forum to be launched by Vivekananda Kendra Paschim Banga Pranta shortly. The team leaders showed their interest to organize similar such programmes for the students .

The special attraction of the programme was the presentation of Shri Satyen Das, a young Richshaw puller who dared to visit Ladak by Rickshaw. With his will power and undaunted spirit he could achieve his goal which was appreciated and applauded  by the participants attended the programme.

Arise , Awake stop not till the Goal is reached – he did not stop.As he pedaled towards the top of Khardung La on the world's highest motorable pass, he remembered the words of his wife and 9-year-old daughter: "You must complete this mission.”

It is a 2,500km journey that could unnerve even the most seasoned traveler — mountainous terrain, snow-covered tracks, killer weather and sub-zero temperatures. All this preceded by a grueling 2,000 km ride along the highways that connect Kolkata with the northernmost tip of the country. Now imagine doing it on a rickety rickshaw, running simply on will power.

In total, he covered nearly 7,000 kilometers (4,440 miles) to be the first to accomplish the feat, which he hopes to have endorsed by Guinness World Records.

VKIC foundation day 2015

Chairman VKIC, Dipok Kr Barthakur, delivering the welcome address mentioned that this year is significant for VKIC as it the birth centenary year of Eknathji Ranade, the founding father of Vivekananda Kendra and Vivekananda Rock Memorial. His vision to establish a centre to study the culture of Northeast of India led to the inception of Vivekananda Institute of Culture (VKIC) in 1993.

VKIC has been carrying out various activities in Northeast India especially in Arunachal and Assam. The various studies on different communities carried out by VKIC revealed that though the communities unique in their own way shared many commonalities in their belief system, practices, food habits etc. It is this commonality that VKIC highlights to identify the unifying links among the different communities. To achieve this end VKIC conducts seminars, lecture series, documentation and so on. VKIC also comes out with a bi-annual researched based journal Quest which is well received among the intellectuals and the academia.

In the year 1999, VKIC conceived the idea of felicitating a person from Northeast who has done tremendous service in protecting, preserving and promoting indigenous faith amongst its people. Since then, every year, VKIC Sanmaan is conferred on a person of repute on the foundation day of VKIC.

It is a great privileged for VKIC to be conferring the award on Sri Ramkuiwangbe Newmme of Dimasa Hasao. Sri Ramkui, President, Zeliangrong Heraka Association, Nagaland, Manipur & Assam tirelessly work for the promotion of Heraka faith of the Zeliangrong community overcoming even death threat. Sri Ramkuiji had worked closely with Rani Ma Gaidilui, the great freedom fighter, whom Pandit Nehru described her as the,”Queen of Hills”.  This year is also the centenary year of Rani Ma Gaidilui.

VKIC is happy to have Sri Ramkuiwangbe,VKIC Sanmaanee  and V.V.Bhatt, as Chief Guest on its foundation day and extends a warm welcome to both the distinguished guest and to all.

Speech by V.V.Bhatt:
Chief Guest of the Day, Sri V.V. Bhatt, thanked the institute for inviting him on its foundation day. He presented a power point presentation on the issues facing the Northeast. He said that Northeast cannot be conceived as a single entity because of its diversity. The problem facing Northeast can be seen from the point of national security, internal security, regional security and  it is important to redefine the concept of development accordingly. Development is no longer considered in terms of economic growth only. The concept of development has changed drastically but what we follow as paradigm or parameter keeps continuing for a long time. We need to jettison based on our experiences, new thoughts and new schemes need to be incorporated.

The needs of Northeast are best understood by the local people. Northeast cannot follow the development policies followed elsewhere. A development policy of the Northeast has to be resource based. It has to look into development programme where natural resources are used to the maximum without destroying the ecology. How can we improve in our agricultural, forestry, handloom, and handicraft products needs to be worked out? The concept of border check post needs to be replaced by border trade post for facilitating trade with the neighbouring countries. Hydro power sector of the Northeast needs to be developed to be able to sell to the neighbouring countries.

There is a need of formal policies based on negotiation and discussion. Central government’s intervention in terms of kinds should be appreciative. It is the responsibility of the state govenment to create a conducive environment for development projects to be implemented. If we don’t have the implementation ability, development goals in terms of health, education, poverty reduction, employment etc wouldn’t be realized. Northeast people need to ponder over how to create local institutions that caters to local needs. Northeast need social leaders and social mobilization. New propositions for better development need to chalk out.

Local Food to Eco-Food

Local food culture and traditions have evolved over millenniums in tune with the local natural resources as well as the energy-nutrient needs of local communities. Culinary delights have also evolved to stimulate the taste buds differently. Diversity is the spice of life. Rameshwaram being a nodal point in the web of Gulf of  Mannar marine bio-diversity, it has its own unique and dynamic food traditions as well as soil fertility traditions. In this newsletter we examine two aspects of it: a sweet dish made from seaweed available locally and Goddess festivals which also connect with the germination of a variety of seeds of cereals and pulses.

The 'Green Rameshwaram' project is progressing wonderfully. There have been cleaning campaign with participation from people of the other states, the local youths and students. There have been rallies and street plays to sensitize the locals as well as pilgrims to the theme of 'Green Rameshwaram'. There have been green health camps; public awareness programme on hygiene. There has been thus mass outreach programmes to take the message of Green Rameshwaram. We have also been installing bio-methanation plants which produce energy from bio-waste.

In our monthly happening we have the Azolla camp, workshops on nutrient-rich bio-manure, bio-methanation plant workshops and also lecture on traditional medicine. There have been exposure visit of students and farmers to Gramodaya Park to study various green technologies. In our publication section we have eco-toons related to the educational system - the tradition system that was there before the colonial intervention and also the need for holistic education. In our wisdom section we have ecologists discussing how the food production,.distribution and consumption have to be sustainable and in tune with the conservation of the natural resources.
