Under the leadership of Vivekananda Kendra Prasar Vibhag, Tezpur, Vivekananda Kendra Vidyalaya (NEEPCO) Umrangso hosted a Career Counselling Session for class XII students of the school and the locality at its premises on 6 Feb’ 2012. The expert counsellors from Sree Saraswati Thygaraja College (STC), Pollachi, Tamilnadu, conducted a three-hour long interactive session with the students on the ways and means of identifying one’s potential interest and skills in various areas of learning and works.
Dr. Janetius, Director, Centre for Counselling and Guidance, STC, and Mr. Sadiq Basha, Head, English Department, STC, elaborated with the help of powerpoint slides different career avenues emerging in this fast changing world and the ways of internalization and introspection for making a fateful choice for themselves. They exhorted students to sincerely work upon the options before finally fixing on their own area of skill and interest. They also warned students not to make a hasty choice under any overpowering influence of parents, friends or get carried away by the glamour of a particular career profile in vogue. It is insisted that students must make a conscious choice of career path based on a balanced judgement of their aptitude, interest and ability along with unmistaken feedback and observation from parents, teachers, friends and other appropriate sources. The process of making a choice involves a combination of interaction and introspection in all these different levels, opined the experts. Around 40 odd students and another 15 parents attending the session unanimously admitted that it was an eye-opener for them. A general opinion transpired from the whole exercise that career guidance programmes in the beginning or middle of an academic session would be convenient for students and the participation opportunity could be extended to Class X and XI students as well.
