INSPIRING INCIDENTS

T. Subadhra, Mangavilai, Kanyakumari

In our balwadi, one Selvan Sanjai is studying. His parents took him to an English medium school and admitted him there. They have not informed us about the matter. Next day Sanjai wept in the new school and cried to be brought back to our balwadi. Then his parents decided to allows him to continue in our balwadi for another two years. His mother informed this to us. This incident is unforgettable for us.

Kalaivani, Keelakottai, Ramanathapuram

On 04.11.2011, I went to Neeravi School for the cultural competition along with sister Selvarani. On the way, the bus fell down from the road. We were unable to do anything. Then, people from the nearby village came for help and the bus was erected on the road. Afterwards, the bus started. Then we reached the Neeravi School sharply at 9.30 A.M and attended the function, which is unforgettable to me.

S. Sridevi, Mangavilai

I went to the Holy Cross College to distribute exam papers. That college is run by Christians. So, with fear, I approached and met Smt.Anami lecturer. She invited me with a smiling face and appreciated me for working in Vivekananda Kendra since I know all the themes of Swami Vivekananda. She told that I am fortunate to work in Vivekananda Kendra. I am so proud for working in Vivekananda Kendra, which I can not forget.

M. Suja, Kallaveerianvilai, Eeanvilai
Asmitha aged above 2 years is studying in our balwadi. Her parents informed us that she does not mingle with any other children and does not talk with the words, mother, father, brother. Later on, she gradually learned to talk fluently with others. Her parents felt happy for the same. Whenever I went to her house, she used to talk with me. Her grandfather and grandmother praised that Asmitha has been completely changed in her behavior attitude after she joined in our balwadi which made me happy.

Twin for Tirupati in Kanyakumari

Twin for Tirupati in KanyakumariTirumala Tirupati Devasthanam is constructing a shrine for Lord Venkateswara in the campus of Vivekananda Kendra, Kanyakumari.
If everything goes according to plans, this temple which will come up in Kanyakumari on the land donated by Vivekananda Kendra will be a “twin” of the famous temple in Tirupati, albeit smaller in size, replicating all the paraphernalia and the rituals followed in Tirupati.
“Vivekananda Kendra has already handed over 4.68 acres from its campus to the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD) that administers the Tirupati temple. The registration process for the land was completed last week and the papers were handed over,” told the President of the Vivekananda Kendra, Sri P. Parameswaran,

Sri Anand Kumar Reddy, the Tamil Nadu local area committee chairperson of the TTD, explained the idea behind the project. “In 2010, the TTD conducted Srinivasa Kalyanam at Vivekananda Kendra. The response was overwhelming. While we expected only about 1.5 lakh devotees, close to 5 lakh people participated. This prompted TTD officials to think if it was the Lord’s way of conveying that he wanted to be in Kanyakumari. That was the starting point.”

The TTD, Reddy said, had set aside Rs 42.5 crore in the current year’s budget for the preliminary work on the shrine. “Land survey and soil testing will commence sometime this month and then a detailed project report will be drawn up and submitted for approval.”
The temple will also have a centre for teaching the Vedas and a shelter for cattle.
Vivekananda Kendra's public relations officer Sri K.P. Raghunathan Nair said the project was likely to be completed in five years and had the potential to change the landscape of the coastal town. The scenic locale, with the ocean on its south-eastern boundary, falls in Coastal Regulation Zone 2 and all requisite approvals were being obtained for the construction, Nair added.

VKNARDEP : Newsletter March 2012

This month newsletter brings you an excerpt from a classic. Lady Evelyn Barbara "Eve" Balfour (1899-1990)is a legendary name in organic farming. We present excerpts from her address to International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements conference in Switzerland in 1977. The reader will find the address as relevant today as it was more than 35 years ago. And she points out that our educational system need to teach our children about the ecological problems and philosophy. "It is now urgently necessary that a still wider aspect of ecology should also form part of the regular curriculum of all schools, starting at the primary stage."
The trouble is we have first to teach the teachers, and here, I think, we must be agreed on what we want to teach." The newsletter ends with the wisdom of three great souls of India - Tagore, Gandhiji and Vinoba : each calling for a change in our educational system. Thus in both these features the emphasis is on change in educational system.

In the publication section we have shared one of the important publications that we brought out almost two decades ago. 'Back to Nature' is a wonderful synthesis of science, Indian philosophy and ecological awareness. The book looks at the root cause of our ecological crisis and emphasizes a shift in our value system and way of thinking. It reveals a vision that synthesizes quantum mechanics, systems thinking and Indian philosophy. The book is a treat for your mind and leads you to proper eco-action. Read the review in this newsletter and then make sure to order the book.

As ever this month also we have been a bee hive busy with activity: workshops on sustainable agriculture, traditional bone-setting methods, workshops on Azolla technology and kitchen waste based bio-methanation plant training, installation of kitchen waste based bio-methanation plants - all these have happened. Dr.Kamalasannan Pillai and Dr.Ganapathi have given special lectures at VIT and Pondicherry respectively. Dr.Pillai received his societal innovation award at Mumbai in a grand function. There was also Green Building technology workshop attended by architects and engineers this month. A series of talks were given in All India Radio by VK-nardep staff on organic farming. So we have been spreading the green awareness in our own small steps.

You can read all about these and more by downloading our newsletter here.
