Newsletter : February & March 2023

Namaskar

Greetings from Vivekananda Kendra Institute of Culture Phalguna, the twelfth lunar month of the Sanatana Calendar welcomes the transformation in seasons, starting with the spring and the month of festivals. On the fourteenth day of Phalguna, in the Chaturdashi of Krishna Paksha, lies the muhurta of Shivaratri, marked as an auspicious day for the devotees of Shiva, and is celebrated with prayers and amusement for the entire night.

After the fall in the month of Phalguna, then comes the time of Spring. But, Phalguna itself instigates pleasant and positive changes in the weather during the time. There lies a balance in the three doshas of the body i.e. vata, pitta and kapha, which has led to Phalguna being also called the happy month. Like the new blossoms of Phalguna, VKIC has explored innovative endeavours by being part of Partner Organisations of the Engagement Group-C20 which is the group of the Civil Societies under G-20. Being a core partner, VKIC has participated in the Inception Seminar held at Nagpur to discuss regarding the fourteen themes of the C20 and the entrusted theme for VKIC is Diversity, Inclusion, Mutual Respect (DIMR). A webinar was also conducted on the theme where Pujya Swami Paramatmananda Maharajji, chaired as the Chief Guest.

Other activities during this period included Sanskriti Anveshak, an interactive disciplinary forum on the theme “Governance for Coexistence, Harmony and Progress-Traditions and Institutions of Northeast India” with two deliberations by Dr. Anungla Aier on “Customary Law: Continuity and Change With Special Reference to the Naga Society” and the other by Prof. Subhram Rajkhowa on “ Traditional Mediation Mechanisms and Governing Paradigm with reference to North East India”. There was a Quiz competition on ‘Sanskriti’, in collaboration with Arya Vidyapith College, held inside the campus of the College, where the students participated enthusiastically. This edition also brings in the interviews of the VKIC Sanmanees, 2023, as taken up by the Research Associates of VKIC.

In the rediscovering North East section, we have interesting cultural facts about Tiwa, Naga and Khasi community and we conclude with a book review on one of our publications ‘ Namghar: The Social Unifier'. Hope the Newsletter to be an interesting read and with this I thank the Almighty and our receivers for their constant support and guidance.

Any form of suggestion is appreciated.

Medical traditions to Metamorphosis

This month in our newsletter you can see how the local traditions can be revived for the protection of the bio-diversity and social coherence. What we have presented are excerpts from our publication, published as part of 'Green Rameshwaram' and the UNICEF WaSH initiative. They are also part of the panels in the awareness creation exhibition conducted at  various places in the island of Rameshwaram. In our 'Happenings' we have Azolla workshop, workshops on indigenous Varma-Bone setting techniques, Bio-methanation plant training and awareness camps. In the ethnic medicine workshop a documentation CD of the Varma techniques was released. In Green Rameshwaram we have college students from Kanyakumari district coming and participating in the cleaning campaign. In the publication we have excerpt from Samagra Vikas which is about management of the urban waste through recycling of the organic matter. It is an excerpt from the article by Gary Gardner on recycling of organic wastes.

It is really inspiring to see college students getting down to earth and clean the traditional water bodies of Rameshwaram in the spirit of service and cleaning mission. Green Rameshwaram is now going with much interest from beyond the boundaries of the island itself. >From the installation of bio-methanation plants to produce both energy efficiency as well as solid waste management to the awareness camps and green health camps to the cleaning mission, the island is now slowly but surely waking up to the idea of clean India.

In the wisdom section we have biologist and educationist Lewis Thomas talk about the living planet. Claude Alvares the famous eco-activist from Goa talks about how living traditions are important for a sustainable living. Science writer Shawn Radclif speaks takes one from the reality of biological metamorphosis to the spiritual: … While dissecting a caterpillar, a 17th century Dutch biologist discovered that early versions of the future butterfly—such as the wings, antennae, and legs—already exist in the caterpillar’s body before the formation of the chrysalis. …So caterpillars already carry parts of their future selves inside, and the potential for transformation exists even before it is visible from the outside. Isn’t that amazing?!

Organisation : Vivekananda Kendra News

Eknathji : One Life One MissionA mere collection of people is not congenial to the growth of the organisation. The individuals must be competent in the sense that they must be physically sound, intellectually equipped and monetarily rich. As is said in Sanskrit or in most of of the Indian languages, they should offer their Tana (body), Mana (mind) and Dhana (wealth) for the propagation of the cause. They must be physically prepared for the exertion and torture, mentally ready to suffer everything and monetarily unhesitating to part with their wealth for translating the noble thought into concrete form.

Organisation : Vivekananda Kendra News

Eknathji : One Life One MissionThere is an intricate web of relationship. The society is interwoven with all these institutions. A very marvellous system of organisation has been therein all these spheres. Hence we know organisation is not something that is new to us. Organisation is in our blood. What is more, that organisation is according to our own necessity, of our own type! We have given the organisational structure, the ethos, the inspiration from our own view of life, our own spiritual mission of reality.   -Ma.
